When working in colour Derek likes to use a variety of media. Sometimes the soft luminosity and forgiving textures of pastel suit the subject and the situation, at other times, the speed and spontaneity of watercolour are appropriate. Out of doors, where the surroundings change constantly, he likes to work on his sketchbooks with pen and swift washes of colour. Occasionally, in the studio, he turns to the rigours of oil paint.
